A pensive Elvis, interrupted from reading, is photographed aboard the Southern Railroad. Elvis at 21. Photograph by Alfred Wertheimer. July 4, 1956.
Wertheimer had the unique opportunity to photograph Elvis in 1956, back when the young musician was quickly gaining popularity, when Tennessee lunch counters were still segregated, when America was still getting acquainted with the sound of rock. Hired by RCA Victor, Wertheimer had access that would never again be equaled — onstage, at home and in transit with Elvis, who was only 21 at the time.

Gentlemen Prefer Blondes: The Intimate Diary of a Professional Lady. Anita Loos. Illustrator Ralph Barton. Boni & Liveright, 1925. First edition. Original dust jacket.
One of several famous novels published that year to chronicle the so-called Jazz Age, including Fitzgerald’s The Great Gatsby. Loos was inspired to write the book after watching a sexy blonde turn intellectual H. L. Mencken into a lovestruck schoolboy. Originally published as a magazine series in Harper’s Bazaar. Edith Wharton dubbed it “The great American novel.”
